J. Vernon Mcgee J. Vernon McGee has an interesting way of looking at the Bible. He seems to take a standpoint on Galations that is very refreshing. I have never heard a biblical scalar use the word cool before. I just really enjoyed reading his commentary. He divides the book into five parts, the first being the introduction. He talks about how in the first five verses Paul tells that he is an apostle by God not by man. In verse two he describes that Paul is writing to the churches of Galatia and not the church body that is composed of all that are saved. In verse four he gives a very inspiring view of how Jesus gave himself. As well as talking about how God will deliver us from present evil. From verse five he talks about how wonderful God is and how we need to praise his name. McGee then goes on to talk about Paul's subject in Galations. Paul is writing this letter to warn about Judaizers. After Paul had gone threw an area these Judaizers would come right behind him and add to what Paul said. They would tell them that they had to obey the Mosaic Law as well as have faith. The main idea for verses 1:6-10 holds the same main idea. God has provided us with the one and only true gospel and this is what Paul was preaching. If anyone should ever come up to and tell you that your belief is right up to a point we should tell them to leave us alone. In the next part he talks about Paul's experiences in Arabia. In verses eleven and twelve Paul states one again about how the gospel he preaches came from no man but from God. In verses 18-24 we read about Paul going to meet with the other apostles and their reaction to him. The church as well as the apostles in Jerusalem was slightly reluctant to accept Paul when he first arrived. In fact McGee says ?without the help of Barnabas, Paul would probably have waited for a long time before the church in Jerusalem would have received him?. Paul never did meet up with all the apostles. He only met two the brothers of Jesus, James and Peter. Now we come to chapter two of Galations. This is the point were things really start to get interesting. This is when Paul comes back to Jerusalem with Titus. It was a very powerful message that Paul stated by bringing one who was uncircumcised to the church of Jerusalem. The real meat of verses 2:1-10 is when Paul meets with the apostles. In this meeting they both presented their version of the gospel and came to find out that they had nothing to add to Paul's version. They had come to the agreement that both gospels were true and accurate. Now we move to Paul's experiences in Antioch with Peter. It was well know that Jews did not feel that they should eat meat. Well at the church in Antioch there was a mixture of both Jews and Gentiles. They also had a great meal called a love feast in this church. Well this lead to some problems having Jews that didn't eat meat and Gentiles that did. The solution was to have two separate tables, one with meat and one without. When Paul came he saw no problem in eating meat so he went to sit at the gentiles table. When Simon Peter arrived he saw Paul sitting at the table and sat at the Jews table anyway. Later after the meal Peter ask Paul about eating meat and Paul explained to Peter that eating meat cannot separate you from God if you are saved by grace. Peter then ate meat the next morning and enjoyed it. That evening when friends from the church in Jerusalem came Peter went from the Gentile table back to the kosher table. ?By his actions he was saying that the gentile table was wro ng and the kosher table was right. In an intimate conversation with the Reedsy team, Dom  reveals what it was like for him to write and publish his first book.Hi Dom, thanks for chatting with us. To start things off, why don't you tell us a little about yourself and the book you've written?Born and raised in Italy for most of my life, I ended up in Vancouver, Canada, because of the growing filming industry. I used to work for the Vatican City TV Channel (yes, they have a TV Channel!) in Rome, but as soon as the economy in Italy started to crumble after the financial crisis of 2008, I decided to move and took a shot in becoming a video editor, producer and writer in Canada's biggest west coast city. I'm quite confident to say that the tough immigration process I had to go through was the fi re starter to what would become The Abyss of Lumberwitch.It was July 5th, 2012. I was standing outside of my immigration lawyer's office. He had just told me that, after two years living and working in Canada, my stay in the country was not guaranteed. I could still work for the time being but I needed to wait for the final approval from Immigration that would decide my future in Canada. At the same time, my financial situation was touching rock bottom. The cherry on top of the cake was that my girlfriend had just left Vancouver and gone back to Rome, ending a four-year-long relationship.The next day, I had reached the lowest point of my depression, when my mother asked me a question that changed everything: â€Å"How long has it been since the last time you wrote something?† I'm always been a writer, since I was 12. I had written several movie scripts and four novels by then. I had also published a book in Italy when I was 22 and won a couple of awards with it. But nothing r eally lasted. Since I moved to Vancouver, my focus on becoming video editor, producer and screenwriter had swallowed up every drop of my energy. My mother's question really raised a valid point. I needed to escape a reality that I couldn't run away from. My passion in writing could help by bringing me far away to the land of imagination, where immigration lawyers, relationship break-ups and emaciated bank accounts were not allowed. "Writing helped me escape a reality I couldn't run away from." @domcutrupi So on July 7th, 2012 I started to put words on paper. I didn't have any idea of what I was going to write, but I needed to. As soon as my fingers started to type, the story formed before my eyes, as if it had been hidden inside me for a long time. And for three months, four hours a day, I was in Klondike, along with Jonathan and Melody, watching the darkness of Lumberwitch unfold.Four years later, I'm publishing The Abyss of Lumberwitch on July 7th, 2016, to celebrate the day the first words shaped on the blank page.This is one of the first instances at Reedsy of a book originally written in another language (Italian). Could you tell us what the process of getting the book translated was like? Do we get to see the Italian version?I wrote the novel in Italian because at that time I wasn't so confident writing in English, at least not to the extent of writing an entire book. But after the first draft was completed, two dear friends of mine read it and gave me the same feedback. They al l said that the novel was better for a North American audience rather than an Italian one. Since I was already living in Canada, I found that this suggestion matched perfectly with my intention to build a career as a writer in North America, rather than in Italy.So I searched for a translator who could keep my style intact through the translation, and I ended up using a pool of multiple professionals over three years. In the meantime, while working on the first and second draft of the English version, I fell in love with the language, so much so that one of my last translators suggested I go through the entire book and reformulate the language to make sure the translation reflected my style. And so I did. When I felt that the English version was finally ready, I had two beta readers (who also acted as proofreaders) give me suggestions. Their feedback was the final test for me to see if my story could work in a different language too. Their reviews of the novel was enthusiastic, so I knew the next step was to hire a professional editor to make my novel the best it could be, and that's how I found Reedsy.Regarding the Italian version, it will be published by the end of the year. I need now to polish and update the Italian language written four years ago.Were you worried about losing out on readers at home because you were marketing the book to an English-speaking audience?  When I think about my book, I think about it in English. The story, the characters, even certain dialogues reflect the English culture I knew from growing up, from movies to books, along with my travels across Canada and USA (and yes, Yukon and the Klondike area as well). Publishing in Italian is not part of a marketing strategy per se. I see it as an opportunity to use my first language to give more readers the possibility  to access my story, and maybe see something different in it, something that comes from a different culture, the culture I belong to the most. After Italian, my plan i s to translate the novel in Chinese, German and Japanese. I'm sure it will be another incredible adventure.What was the process of looking for an editor as a self-published author like?The process took one month. I had spent three and a half years in the translation. I didn't want to go for the first person popping up in my Google search. Also, due to the story, I needed someone located in North America, even better on the west coast. For one entire month, almost every day I found myself searching in blogs about editing, personal pages, lists of hidden and obscure documents in some remote domains that no one had touched for years. To be honest, it was really frustrating. At some point, I felt that my entire day would pass by just reading bios and portfolios of people I wasn't sure about.I don't know how that happened but it was during one of my search that I ended up on Reedsy. I didn't know anything about the website but it looked really professional and well-made. I liked the layo ut as well as the details in the search tab. I loved the fact that I could trust the website thanks to a policy that involved LinkedIn, personal websites and a rigid identity verification process that guaranteed me that I was dealing with real professionals and not amateurs or scam artists. Once I found Reedsy, the search for an editor became very enjoyable and exciting. Everything I needed was under one big umbrella. Once I found Reedsy, the search for an editor became very enjoyable and exciting. You worked with Angela Brown, an editor from the Reedsy marketplace. What was that like?I sent five requests to five editors that I thought could be a match with my novel. Four of them came back with a quote and the first three pages edited as a sample. Interestingly, Angela didn't send me a sample, but she was the first editor to reply after reading my sample. The long message she sent me touched on a few points of my work I really cared about. I had the impression that she wasn't just one of many editors who wrote nice things to get a gig, but someone who'd actually found a piece of writing she really wanted to work on. She sounded as if she connected to the story in a special way. Those words convinced me that she was the right person for The Abyss of Lumberwitch. In addition, Angela's extensive and very impressive portfolio spoke for itself, with more than 400 books edited under her belt, many of which are high-profile titles.Reading my novel after Angela put her hands on it was like reading the version of my story I'd always had in mind. Everything flowed so smoothly, yet the story was still intact, as was my style. I was particularly impressed by her detailed level of research, making sure that all the historical facts and elements in the story matched the setting. She often pointed out certain things that only a second eye like hers could catch. She went beyond simple editing, beyond grammar and syntax. She has the ability to look at the story and its style as a whole and make them function at their best. I don't know how she did it, but I know that we're soon going to set up a date for her to edit the sequel!What advice do you have to share for aspiring authors reading this blog?First, discipline. That's the main force behind the wheels of someone who wants to finish and publish a book. Without it, I'm confident enough to say that it's almost impossible to complete a novel (and I'm not the first writer to say it but one out of thousands). If you write o nce in a while, whether because you wait for inspiration or the right time, you likely won’t get there. Write every day, even for one hour.   Five hundred, one thousand, two thousand words a day (in Stephen King fashion), doesn't matter. Make sure that you're always creating content, whether it's good, Flaubert-perfect, or the worst thing ever written, just keep writing, especially when it comes to first drafts. You'll have plenty of time to make it as great as you want through a second and third draft and then through editing. But first you need to get to the last page of that damn book! "It's almost impossible to complete a novel without discipline." @domcutrupi Second, be honest with your story. I know, it sounds like one of those inspirational memes on Facebook, but it's actually a tough task to accomplish. I would explain that with the best example I have. I grew up watching an endless amount of movies. Stanley Kubrick, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Ingmar Bergman were all my favourites. In literature, Fedor Dostojevski, Stephen King, Philip K. Dick, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez were my mentors. When I was a kid, I used to write a lot in the style that resembled these people: maybe long scenes of dialogue full of swearing, comedy, or sci-fi scripts set in the next future. But when I let my mind release the real story I wanted to write, I ended up with The Abyss of Lumberwitch, an historical fantasy for all ages that has none of those features and doesn't seem to match with any styles of my favorite authors.This taught me that we tend to follow the artists we love, but most of the time we do nothing but follow them; we rec reate their style through the love we have for them and we forget about us, what we're really interested in, our obsessions, our passions, our deepest desires, which is what drove these artists to be unique in their own way. They were not copying, they were inspired by others, but created their own stories. Four years ago the IT departments of healthcare had a mere $343 million invested considering the potential of what was to come (Forbes, Lee 2013). Since then venture capitalists have tripled their investments into the health care IT and sunk $955 million (Forbes, Lee 2013). The article expresses that the federal government is even going to be sinking some major money into hospitals and medical offices to digitize health care. It all comes to a very good point mentioned in the article. â€Å"All of these VCs are now starting to put money into the space. And as we start getting some big wins, we’re going to see this accelerate,† said Aza Raskin, cofounder of Massive Health — a startup developing a mobile app to encourage healthier eating and other health-related tools — in an interview with Fast Company. â€Å"The smartest minds of our generation shouldn’t be working on getting us more addicted to Facebook or Twitter; they should be working on helpi ng us get — and stay — healthy† (Forbes, Lee 2013). We would be able to break the language barrier between patients and healthcare workers. We have so many social media sites on the web now a days. Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter, G Plus, and many others. That is how we stay connected to friends and family. Lark is a silent alarm clock and sleep monitor that tracks and analyzes the quality of sleep a person gets over time (Forbes, Lee 2013). In this day of technological advances there is no surprise at the countless ones that are in place in regards to the health care industry. With the amount of change from paper charting to digitized charting methods, egg timers on when med  pass is compared to computer pop ups, from easy access to patients meds to secured sign in procedures to acquire the meds, and from sitting in a waiting room for countless hours on end to picking up your phone and making a quick call is all proof that it has been time for a change in medical technology for a long time now. The Defence of the Corporate Veil - Parent Companies Beware! Much interest has recently been shown in the potential consequences of the judgment given in Stocznia Gdanska SA -v- Latvian Shipping Co and others, which was substantially upheld by the Court of Appeal on 21 June 2002. Although the case related to Shipbuilding Contracts, the result has reinforced the traditional view that the Courts will not countenance any further erosion of the fundamental principle of English Company Law that a company is to be regarded as a legal entity with a separate legal personality, distinct from that of its members. However, the case has highlighted potential alternative sources of liability for parent companies establishing wholly owned single-purpose subsidiaries - in many industry sectors, including shipping, property and big-ticket asset finance. The basic principles The principle of separate corporate personality has been established for over a century. In the leading case of Salomon -v- Salomon & Co. (1897), the House of Lords held that, regardless of the extent of a particular shareholder's interest in the company, and notwithstanding that such shareholder had sole control of the company's affairs as its governing director, the company's acts were not his acts; nor were its liabilities his liabilities. Thus, the fact that one shareholder controls all, or virtually all, the shares in a company is not a sufficient reason for ignoring the legal personality of the company; on the contrary, the "veil of incorporation" will not be lifted so as to attribute the rights or liabilities of a company to its shareholders. The basic principle established in Salomon in relation to single companies was extended to groups of companies by a comparatively recent decision of the Court of Appeal in Adams -v- Cape Industries PLC (1990). In that case, the Court of Appeal held that, as a matter of law, it was not entitled to lift the corporate veil against a defendant company, which was a member of a corporate group, merely because the corporate structure had been used so as to ensure that the legal liability in respect of particular future activities of the group would fall on another member of the group rather than on the defendant company. In effect, the Court of Appeal rejected the argument that the corporate veil should be pierced just because a group of companies operated as a single economic entity. The readers and editors often significantly demand the involvement of originality and creativity. The level of creativity is required in the development of lasting and satisfactory understanding of the development of the voice. According to Hunter College Reading/Writing Center common characteristics of ‘voice’ is â€Å"Distinct from the terms persona, narrator and tone, voice is associated with the underlying vision of a writer, her general attitude toward the world.† This paper is a fervently articulates the definition of voice through the linguistic choices of Shakespeare’s in his famous play Twelfth Night in evident through his passion for drama and poetry.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The voice when applied in rhetoric it demonstrates the clarity of the visions and thoughts of the writer. Most importantly, the content reflects a unique commentary that speaks beyond what is given in the play. Any individual who is accustomed to the work of William Shakespeare would be able rapidly to detect that Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare’s works through his techniques of writing. Shakespeare uses a unique combination of writing techniques such as twisted iambic pentameter and soliloquies. At the start of Twelfth Night, Orsino, a Duke, demands if music creates love, then â€Å"Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting† (1.1.2). If music be the food of love, play on; Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting, The appetite may sicken, and so die   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   That strain again! it had a dying fall: O, it came o’er my ear like the sweet sound, That breathes upon a bank of violets, Stealing and giving odour! Enough; no more: By using iambic pentameter, Shakespeare defines Orsino’s character to be different from those of different social class. Here, Shakespeare uses iambic pentameter in a distinct way by switching the tones around to create a different tonal pattern. Instead of the regular iambus of one stressed and one unstressed beat (ba-BUM) for ten syllables straight, he makes a modification to some syllables in order to emphasize certain words.SIR TOBY BELCH Approach, Sir Andrew: not to be abed aftermidnight is to be up betimes; and ‘diluculosurgere,’ thou know’st,– In act 2 scene 3, The syntax and the preceding semicolon on the first line direct the stress on give at the beginning, but the resulting pattern is choppy and almost dactylic in its meter. He often uses this technique on characters that had a higher social status in his plays. On the contrary, those characters of a lower status were deemed not to have the leisure to experiment with literature speaking in regular prose or verse. For example, Malvolio, a butler, attempts prose in the beginning but changes to speak in verse like, â€Å"Daylight and champain discovers not more: this is open. I will be proud I will read politic authors,† (2.5.155-157). Iambic pentameter shows control and yet the emphasis here is on the instability and the intensity of class difference. Thus, Shakespeare’s manipulation of regular iambic pentameter to create differential approach to the field of play each character has. This inherently configures a reflection of his unique voice, and this leads readers to think that, in literature, voice is distinct and unique to develop a persona.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Another literary device that commonly found in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is soliloquy, which involves a character speaking his or her thoughts aloud. The ideas conveyed by the actor are a way providing information from Shakespeare own point view on certain situations. In 2.2 of Twelfth Night, Viola, disguised as Cesario, conveys her realization of the mistakes she caused due to her disguise: Disguise, I see, thou art a wickedness, Wherein the pregnant enemy does much. How easy is it for the proper-false In women’s waxen hearts to set their forms!   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Alas, our fraility is the cause, not we, For such as we are made of, such we be. How will this fadge? My master loves her dearly,And I, poor monster, fond as much on him,And she, mistaken, seems to dote on me.What will become of this? As I am man,My state is desperate for my master’s love.As I am woman, now, alas the day,What thriftless sighs shall poor Olivia breathe! (2.2.26–38)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   This soliloquy serves a purpose of developing context outside of the literal play. In real life, people don’t typically speak their thoughts aloud when alone. Shakespeare’s use of soliloquy is a active interpretation of what the audience does not yet understood. Thus, the conscious choice to use a soliloquy is representative of Shakespeare’s voice because, it develops Shakespeare’s style of presenting mental or non-visible information to become visible to the audience. Soliloquy adequately conveys the strength of Shakespeare to back audience into the scene of play through understanding of the event. Secondly, it develops in a way where Cesario is aware of the whole plot and takes on a role in knowledge as an audience. Furthermore, this foreshadows of how there will be a conclusion to untie this lie, and chaos Viola has created through her disguise. These complex ideas are voices for Shakespeare’s readers to notice through his voice beyond the literal sound of the play.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   A complex idea beyond the authentic voice of the play also develops the style that is distinct to Shakespeare. In the same scene, Shakespeare also personifies the concept of a â€Å"disguise† to render a style of narration. Shakespeare uses apostrophe, and aside or address inanimate objects as though they are alive. For example Cesario concludes that â€Å"Time,† which she addresses as a character, must unravel this madness, as she cannot undo Olivia’s confusion, â€Å"O, Time, thou must unravel this, not I† (2.2.39). In this soliloquy, Caesario highlights the weakness of women, the subjectivity of love and the conflicts presented by appearance versus reality. The use of monologue, apostrophe and iambic pentameter in combination create Shakespeare’s voice. It sets his writing apart from other writers who present a similar plot. For example, Ewon Leslie’s She’s the Man incorporates scenarios from Twelfth Night but is written in an entire different voice and style. Both presenting a story plot of a woman in disguise of men creating a chaotic love web, She’s the Man, is different as the literal voice was of modern English. Which does not use poetry, soliloquy, nor personification. According to Keir Elam, Twelfth Night, â€Å"pleasures and trials of spectatorship† (Elam 3). By having spectatorship and asking audience for appraisal, establishes the use of dramatic irony. Audience is present and indulging in the same space as the characters through the lines: Sir An. Here comes the fool, i’ faith. Look, here comes a fool. Fes. How now, my hearts! Did you never see the picture of ‘We Three’? Hello, my friends! What a pretty picture, three fools all together. Sir To. Welcome, ass. Now let’s have a catch. (2.3.12-17) Taking this even further, Shakespeare typically uses a fool to breaks the fourth wall. The fool is present in this piece as he is in many of Shakespeare’s plays; for example, Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream invites the audience to be with them. This analysis of the way Shakespeare uses tone, mood, style and figurative techniques through the fool to demonstrate his thin king and logic provides further insights reflecting his personality and ability to manipulate what is perceived. However, in She’s the Man, a movie that â€Å"relate only to the plot of the work, the poetry and character being all his own† (Hudson 8), the fool is the audience (not a character). The story presented in She’s the Man has every potential to be another copy of Twelfth Night because it shares a similar plot. Referencing stories outside set Twelfth Night apart from She’s the Man, such as that Twelfth Night’s â€Å"setting of the play, Illyria , as an exotic and unfamiliar location associated with literary romance, lyricism, and illusion,† (Entland, 149). However, the way it is written, its voice, sets it aside from Twelfth Night, which was very much a play written for characters to perform.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   This leads the audience to form the conclusion that voice is something that is expressed and received by the initiator and a receptor. As such, it was important for Shakespeare to develop a style that was unique to him as, through his writing, he expressed himself: his voice was an extension of his thoughts, feelings and emotions. Through using a combination of technique and language, Shakespeare’s voice conveys his opinions, likes, and interests to set up the mood.In fact, the place cannot be found because it is a myth. Thus, voice become unique in bringing the reader to notice outside information that interests the author. This demonstrates the modernist revolution in the arts during the late Renaissance in the service of the avant-garde. And possibly reflect Shakespeare’s stance in studies was open to movements such as structuralism and feminism.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In addition to the literal elements of Shakespeare’s voice that are described in the lines of Act 2 Scene 2, there are also figurative aspects that set his work apart from that of other playwrights and authors. According to Christine Ashby, a language researcher, the production of voice and its use as a tool are separate from the thinking of the individual. Figurative voice represents the voice of the person expressed through their idea, concept or logic. Twelfth Night is a play about the â€Å"dramatization of currently fashionable issues such as gender and sexuality† (Elam 2). This adheres to the famous recurring plot that is typical of Shakespeare’s plays as expressed through the idea of a love triangle, star-crossed lovers, where women is deemed to be powerless when it comes to love. For example, Act 2 Scene 2, Viola expresses how women are subjects to love for men. This derives from a larger social commentary outs ide of the play. Shakespeare’s voice is reflected in his unique style and techniques. The aspects of his work that sets him apart from others work in combination to give his work his voice.
